Explanation - How to get along with your classmates

Explanation - How to get along with your classmates

SUCCESS CRITERIA -
  • I must organise my ideas into paragraphs
  • I must be able to use grammatically correct sentences
  • My punctuation, spelling and sentence organisations should be correct
  • My explanation must include ideas related to the topic

Do you get along with your classmates well? Sometimes, getting along with the other children in your class is difficult. Luckily for you, I will explain how you can easily get along with your classmates.

If you’re having real trouble getting along with the children in your class, these are probably some of the best ways to manage your friendship.
  • Be friendly, kind and talk nicely
Most people like a friendly person. If you want to befriend a kid in your class, just smile, use kind words and ask them if they need any help with anything or if they’d like to play something with you.
  • Help them out with something
Sometimes, some children may be struggling to finish off their work, or may be having trouble fitting in, if they’re new. Walk over and offer them your help. This way, while helping them, you can talk to each other about other things as well as school things.
  • Play with them when they’re down
If you see one of your classmates sitting on their own, or being left out, go play with them and try to make them feel better. If you play with others when nobody else wants to, it shows that you are a kind person.

If you follow all of these ways to get along with the other children in your class, you’d probably have befriended the whole class then. And at the end of the school day, wave or say goodbye, and you’d definitely get one back.

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Adding and subtracting decimals

I did some addition and subtraction strategies on a site called IXL which can help children with their learning (mostly maths). I liked the activities and questions I was given to answer. They made me think and were interesting. Here is a screenshot of what the questions looked like…
Screenshot 2017-07-25 at 11.29.05.png
This question has something to do with addition.

I read this question very carefully and after a short while, I clicked on the last answer, 13.8.
I also took a screenshot of the word “Fantastic!.” This told me that I got the correct answer.Screenshot 2017-07-25 at 11.29.12.png

I did a few more of these activities and got them all right. I think that adding and subtracting decimals is a fun thing to do. I liked working on adding and subtracting decimals and next I would like to learn about adding and subtracting mixed and improper fractions.

Poem - Mistakes

Poem - Jazire, Mistakes
WALT - write creatively on the topic from personal experiences
SUCCESS CRITERIA -
I must write my poem independently
I must reread and edit my work
I must use the correct punctuation and grammar
Poem:
We all make those small mistakes
We have those little accidents
Something either falls or breaks
But that’s not what the problem is
The problem is without mistakes
We wouldn’t learn about new things
We wouldn’t know how long it takes
To learn about what life can bring
That’s why mistakes are important
We can learn from them straight away
And then when we make another
We will know just what to say
It’s okay to make mistakes
We’ll only get better anyway
It doesn’t matter how long it takes
We will always find a way
Mistakes are made
But it’s okay
Because we all know what to say
It’s okay to make mistakes
We’ll only get better anyway
It doesn’t matter how long it takes
We will always find a way

We wrote a poem on mistakes for writing. Above is my poem. I am happy with the way I wrote it. This poem talked about making mistakes which is okay to do so, because we all will eventually learn from them anyway.

Winter Learning Journey
Day 4

Activity -
On your blog, tell us whether you think that fishing in Farewell Spit should be banned (stopped).
I agree that fishing in Farewell spit should be banned. Look at all those poor old Hector's Dolphins who suffer out there. Some people have Set fishing Nets that they set above the surface of the water. Set Net fishing acts as a majorly bad influence to the Hector's Dolphin. Like all marine mammals, they need to come to the surface regularly to breathe, but if they become tangled in set nets, they will have to hold their breath until they suffocate. There are also other things that are a threat to these dolphins. Because they are so close inshore, they are at risk of being injured or harmed by boats. Newborn babies are particularly vulnerable as they swim relatively slowly, close to the surface. Some have been killed by boat propellers when unwary boaties run them over.
Hector's dolphins only have a life time maximum of up to 20 years, and some are less fortunate because of what happens to them. I think fishing on Farewell spit should be stopped, for once, and for all!

Winter Learning Journey
Day 4, Activity 2

Activity -

Watch the following movie trailers for Whale Rider: Whale Rider trailer #1 and Whale Rider Trailer #2 and then write a summary of the movie on your blog. What is it about? Be sure to also give the movie a rating out of 5 based on the trailer [1 = bad movie, 2 = okay movie, 3 = pretty good, 4 = good movie, 5 = excellent movie].

The movie Whale Rider is about a girl named Paikea, or Pai for short. This movie is a contemporary story of love, rejection and triumph as this young Maori girl fights to fulfill a destiny her grandfather refuses to recognize. She ends up sort of connecting with a whale when loads are stranded on a beach and she rides the whale out to sea. I have seen the movie and give it a rating of 4, Pretty Good. I really love Paikea's personality and that she is a dreamer.

Swimming with the sharks

I read about whales who accidentally swam into Farewell spit and how it became a whale graveyard. Whales must have accidentally swam into the spit and were unable to swim back into the ocean because they were stuck in the shallow part of it. This is what some local people did to try and save the beached whales...

They suggested they keep the whales wet, keep their blow holes clear and to stay away from the animals' tails. They also decided to use some of their clothing so that they could drape them over the whales. The next day, the whales had gone and the spit became a whale graveyard.

Wild Eyes, My Moa Mission

I went onto a site called Wild Eyes and uploaded a photo of a Moa. Here is the exact same photo I uploaded. (below...)

Winter Learning Journey
Day 3, Activity 2

I went onto a site called 'predator free NZ' It shows facts about the possum, native to Australia. Possums are pests and have been damaging New Zealand's Native trees' leaves for a very long time.

I agree that possums are pests and a threat to our NZ wildlife. We need to get rid of possums immediately. They have become a very bad influence to New Zealand and have been chewing through the leaves on any native NZ trees they can find. Possums are pests and a threat, nothing more, nothing less, but getting rid of them may be hard.

Day 3, Activity 1

Otorohanga Kiwi House
I decided to help out and protect the native birds of New Zealand by going onto the 'adopt a critter' page and adopting an animal. The animal I adopted was a traditional Brown Kiwi.
Let me tell you a little bit about the brown Kiwi.

Brown Kiwi are native to New Zealand. It is New Zealand's national bird. These birds have a spiky brown plumage, streaked with reddish brown. The closest relatives to kiwi today is the elephant bird from Madagascar. They are also related to emus and cassowaries of Australia, and the extinct moa of New Zealand.

There are five species of kiwi:Brown kiwi, Great spotted kiwi/roroa, Little spotted kiwi, Rowi, Tokoeka

Kiwi can live for between 25 and 50 years. Chicks hatch fully feathered. They emerge from the nest to feed at about five days old and are never fed by their parents. Juveniles grow slowly, taking three to five years to reach adult size.

I interviewed a family member (My younger brother) and asked him what his 5 favourite outdoor things to do were. I told him he could choose from land and sea, and he responded with these 5 outdoor things he enjoyed.

1. Playing ball - He told me he liked playing all sorts of ball games like Handball, Gutter ball, Basketball and rugby.

2. Swimming at the beach - He likes to go for a dip in the ocean now and then, and he says that he also loves collecting shells from the beach as well.

3. Running - He has a very energetic spirit and loves racing around with our pet dog, Princess.

4. Boogie Boarding - His way of surfing. Lying on a boogie board in the water on a nice sunny day to cool off.

5. Gymnastics - He sometimes can be a bit hyper-active and starts jumping around everywhere. Sometimes, he even cartwheels around the whole of our small front yard.

Winter Learning Journey - Laura Dekker sailing trip D2 A2

Winter Learning Journey
Day 2, Activity 2

I watched a youtube video of Laura Dekker, a 16 year old girl, who sailed around the world...alone! It really inspired me. I can tell she is a very brave young woman, and if I got to interview her, these would be five of the questions I would ask her.

* "Laura, was it scary being out there all alone?"
* "Exactly How many places did you get to visit on your trip?"
* "What advice can you give to all those young children wanting to grow up to be just like you?"
* "Did you learn anything from the places you visited?"
* " You were only at some places for a few days. Was it easy to fit in though?"

Day 2, Activity 1

On my Winter Learning Journey, I visited Rangitoto Island, Tane Mahuta and KareKare beach. I most enjoyed visiting Rangitoto Island because of the variety of experiencing and interesting activities I could choose to do if I was really there!

There was one called bird and wildlife watching which I would like to do one day. There was also a kayaking and canoeing activity, which probably would've been my favourite if I was really visiting Rangitoto. The rest of the activities were...

Boating
Diving and snorkelling
Fishing
Swimming
Walking and Tramping

My 5 favourite activities from the Tourist video from Auckland - Winter Learning journey D1 A2

Winter Learning Journey
Day 1, Activity 2

I watched a video called Tourist video from Auckland, and I chose 5 of my favourite activities from it. You can see them listed below.

 - Walking along Mission Bay
I love going for relaxing and peaceful walks with my friends and family, and Mission Bay beach is a nice place to do so.

 - Auckland Domain - Public Park
I like going to the park sometimes to watch people play cheerfully while I sit back on a bench. It's nice to go somewhere to get a bit of air as well.

 - Memorial Museum
I think I would enjoy a trip to the Memorial Museum to see and learn about the treasures of Aotearoa.

 - Auckland zoo
Going to the zoo and seeing all the different types of animals there would be fun. You'd get to see some furry friends, like the red panda and the monkey, and you'll also get to see elephants, giraffes and much more exciting animals.

 - Rainbow's end
It's a roller coaster of fun down at Rainbow's end, the coolest theme park ever! I bet everybody loves a good ride on a pirate ship, right! There are all sorts of things to do at Rainbow's end. Bumper cars, Bumper boats, Log rides and much much more!

New Zealand People - Winter Learning Journey D1 A1

Winter Learning Journey
Day 1, Activity 1

For my first activity for the Winter Learning Journey 2017, I read a passage about the people of New Zealand and chose three interesting facts to post on my blog.

I learnt that Maori is an essential part of New Zealands identity. I also learnt that Maori travelled thousands of miles on canoes and became the first people to inhabit New Zealand. Another interesting fact I found about the people of New Zealand is that they are the inventors of so many commonly used things including freezer vacuum pumps, the fastest motorbike in the world, stamp vending machines, etc.

When I look at these facts, I say, "Wow! New Zealand is a really fascinating place!"

First, I registered myself onto the site. I then got given a key or a pass code. mI saved my pass code and carried on. I clicked continue and got brought to 2 cool activities. One was called the mountain of understanding and the other was slingshot of understanding. I played the slingshot game and my task was to get 100 points. It was an interesting game and I would love to play another just like this one.

Reading Comprehension - Making Connections

Reading Comprehension - Making Connections Worksheet Activity

You read all the time. Sometimes you read just for fun. Other times you read for schoolwork. No matter what you are reading, what you read has meaning. You can connect to what you read. Making connections is important. It’s giving your brain a place to store what you read. Your brain is like a file box. The new information is kept in a safe place. You can think about it later. When you want to use the information, it’s there in your brain. The more connections you make, the better. If you have a lot of connections your brain can work faster. If you have many ways to think about something, the information will be easier to find. There are different ways to connect as you read. One kind of connection is self-to-text. This is when you realize something you read in a story has happened to you in your own life. Usually, this kind of connection comes with the emotions you felt at that time. It may make you feel happy, afraid, or sad. Another kind of connection is text-to-text. This is when reading a story reminds you about a story you read before. The last kind of connection is text-to-world. It reminds you of something you have seen happen to someone you know or have seen in the news.

Answer the following questions based on the reading passage. Don’t forget to go back to the passage whenever necessary to find or confirm your answers.

Why is it important to connect to the text when you read?
It gives your brain a place to store what you read.
How do connections make it easier for your brain to find information?
Connections give your brain more ways to think about stuff.
What is a self-to-text connection?
When you read something and it reminds you of something you did or what happened to you.
What is a text-to-text connection?
When what you read reminds you of something else you might have read,
What is a text-to world connection?
When something you read reminds you of something that happened to someone else or something you saw before.

This activity shows and tells what making connections is all about and how important it is to the brain and the mind. It also talks about why reading is important and why some people might read. Just for fun, just for school work, etc.

My multiplication progress

This term, one of my goals was to be able to multiply 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. I have achieved that goal by doing a few activities online. (above) Here is the evidence of my multiplication progress.
