Summer Learning Journey Day 4 Week 2

Summer Learning Journey
Day 4

Activity 1 - WWII was made up of many battles and events. Follow this link to read more about the timeline of WWII.

Choose two key events and find out some more information about what happened on those days. On your blog, write a short summary of two events, including the names of people involved and where the event happened.

1 -
  • 8 January: Rationing begins in Britain - 1940
  • Rationing was introduced temporarily by the british.
  • It was introudice several times, during and immediately after a war.
2 -
  • 7 April: Italy invades Albania - 1939
  • The Italian invasion of Albania (April 7–12, 1939) was a brief military campaign by the Kingdom of Italy against the Albanian Kingdom
  • The conflict was a result of the imperialist policies of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Activity 2 -
Click on this link to find a list of VC winners. Choose one from the Second World War, and read about him. On your blog tell us about him. Who was he? What did he do to earn a Victoria Cross medal?

I chose Leonard Trent. Leonard Trent was born on the 14th of April, 1915 in Nelson. he died in Auckland, Takapuna, 1986, on the 19th of May. Trent was awarded the VC for his actions during a bombing raid on Amsterdam in May 1943.

Bonus Activity - Both men and women served in World War II. Many women chose to enlist as nurses and be stationed overseas caring for wounded soldiers. My nana was one of those nurses. She (Dorothy) spent much of World War II working on a large Red Cross ship that was stationed off the coast of Cairo, Egypt.

For this activity, you are going to imagine that you are just like Dorothy and that you are working as a nurse on a large medical ship.

One day you are walking along the deck of the ship when you hear a loud bang. You start to run as you see smoke coming from the far end of the ship. You run towards the room where your patients are waiting to receive treatment from the doctor. Just as you arrive at the door to their room you hear another loud bang and you…

Complete the story provided above. To earn full points you must write, at least, 8-10 sentences. What happens next?

you.... open the door immediately to find that 1 patient and a nurse have been shot cold, a bullet stained with blood on the floor. You don't know what to do, but you still try to help the 2, laying the nurse on an empty bed near the patient. You wrap bandages around the areas where they were shot. (the nurse on the forehead, The patient, in the chest) After that, you check for a pulse. Unfortunately, the nurse did not make it, and though you know it wasn't your fault, you blame yourself. You cry and stare out an open window and see something you shouldn't have. A man with a large gun. You duck for cover and run out of the room, the patient following you. He is limping, but he is limping fast! The two of you make it out in time, and are grateful, but sad. Something happened that you couldn't help out with.

Comment on todays activities - It was confusing, the first activity. I did not know what to do, honestly, even though I had instructions to read. But my favourite activity was writing the story, or completing it anyway!

Hi Jazire
What amazing work!!! What was your least favourite part and why was it your least favourite???

Hey there Jazire, great job finishing this story. It was really gripping to read. I liked how you said 'a bullet stained with blood on the floor'. I thought that painted a very vivid picture in the readers' mind. You've written an exhilarating story. It moves with such speed from one thing to the next. I had no idea there was going to be a man with a large gun out the window. I love your descriptive language too.

Great job, I hope you keep writing stories. They're very entertaining.

Hey Jarzie

Outstanding work, Keep it up. I love your piece of writing. It is amazing. What was your favourite part about writing this short story?

Hey Jazire!

Even though you found the first two activities a little confusing, you did a great job. It's not always easy doing your own research and writing about it.

That's an interesting fact. Unfortunately rationing was important during and after war times when supplies weren't so available and many. It wasn't quite like today where food is readily available down and the supermarket and you can go when you please to get what you need. When a war is going on, life changes and there is only a certain, limited amount of food and resources that people were allowed to have, so that everyone got something and it lasted as long as possible. Do you think it would have been more of a challenge for bigger families?

Leonard Trent sure was a brave soldier. I can't imagine what it might be like to fight in a war, let alone try and rescue someone in the midst of it all. Did any of your family members serve in the war?

Keith Elliott was one of the soldiers who received a VC and he was actually my friends grandfather which I just found out yesterday :)

Nicky :)
