Rounding numbers

Success Criteria -
  • I must remember to add the numbers before and after
  • I must look for the number given - hundredth/tens/thousands

4, 897, 542.854

Round the number to the….
1 - Nearest thousands
I will look at the number in the thousands place, which is 7. Now I will substitute all of the numbers after 7 with the number 0. Now the number will become 4, 897000. I know that this is the thousands number before 4, 897, 542.854. The number after that will be 4, 898000. I will look at the number after 7, which is 5, and now I know to round up. The nearest thousand is 4, 898000.
2 - Nearest tenths
The nearest tenth is 4, 897, 542.900. I know this because I looked at the number in the tenths place, which is 8. I then substituted the numbers after with 0. The number became 4, 897, 542.800, which is the number before. The tenths number after 4, 897, 542.854 is 4, 897, 542.900. I then looked at the number after 8, which was 5. 5 indicates that I should round up. That is how I got my answer.
3 - Nearest ten thousands
I will first look at the number in the ten thousands place, which is 9, and all of the numbers after 9 will become 0. The number is now 4, 890000. This is the number before 4, 897, 542.854. The number after would be 4, 90000. I will look at the number after 9, which is 7. This means I will round up to 4, 90000.
4 - Nearest hundreths
Since I am rounding to the nearest hundredths number, I will look at the number in the hundredths place, which is 5. I will now change all of the numbers after to 0. The number is now 4, 897, 542.850, which is the number before. The number after would be 4, 897, 542.860. Now I will look at the number after 5, which is 4. 4 Shows me that I must round down. The answer is 4, 897, 542.850.
5 - Nearest tens
My answer is 4, 897, 540. This is because I looked at the number in the tens place, which is 4. Then I made all of the other whole numbers after this to 0. The number became 4, 897, 540. This would be the number before, and the number after would be 4, 897, 550. Now I will look at the number after 4, which is 2, and 2 indicates that I must round down. Therefore, my answer is, again, 4, 897, 540.
6 - Nearest whole number
To find the nearest whole number, I will first look at the last whole digit in this number, which is 2. I will not worry about the numbers after the decimal point, because those numbers are not whole numbers. But I will look at the number in the tenths place, which is 8. 8 will help me to decide whether to round up or down. SInce 8 is bigger than 5, I will round up to the nearest whole number, which is 4, 897, 543.
7 - Nearest hundreds
My answer is 4, 897, 500 because I did this. First, I looked at the number in the hundreds place, which is 5, and then I made all of the numbers after 5 become 0. The number changed to 4, 897, 500, which I decided, was the tens number before the original number. The number after that is 4, 897, 600. After I did this, I looked at the number after 5, which was 4, and 4 is less than 5 so I rounded down to get my answer!

Today I learned how to round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand and much more. It was fun learning about these things, and we also did an activity on rounding.

Making Up A Game

During the time that some of our Year 7 and 8 students went to camp, Room 7 was making up fun games to play with the younger kids. We were all in groups of 4 or 3, and my group made up a really fun game that the children LOVED!  Here are the rules of our game, Rock Paper Scissors Round...



Rock Paper Scissors Round
WALT - Work together as a team
Equipment - Listening Ears, Cones for obstacles, cones for objects to protect
How to play the game -
  • Equal amount of teammates
  • 2 teams
  • Object to protect
  • Everyone lining up in a single file
  • When I say GO the first person from each team will run towards each other
  • When they meet, they do a round of Rock Paper Scissors
  • Winner carries on trying to get to the other team’s object
  • Keep on doing rounds of Rock Paper Scissors
  • Winner keeps on carrying on
  • If someone reaches the object, their whole team switches sides
  • This time, instead of trying to get to the other team’s side, they try to get back to their side, with the object in hand
  • If the person carrying the object loses to the other team, they hand it over
  • Team that gets the other team’s object back to their base wins

Basic Facts on Prototec

Name: Jazire

Today I sat Stage 8 Timed on prototec. I got 75%, or 30/40. I think I could have done better...

The part I found difficult was Percentages, fractions & decimals. Another hard part of the test was Factors and Multiples. I will try to gain more knowledge about these things in order to improve, and in order to get a higher score next time.

Treasure Quest Multiplication

Today for maths, I played around with a treasure hunting multiplication game on a site called Maths Playground. I had a target, which was a number, and then I had a multiplication chart. I had to find my target as many times as the game had asked me to. For example, if my target was 9, and there was a little 3 on the top left side above the 9, I would have to find 9, 3 times. This game was really fun and I would love to play it again!

Today for Basic Facts, I used a site called Fact Monster. It is a maths site you can use to practise all types of maths strategies.  I chose to practise my tables, and I clicked on Level 7, the highest and hardest level. I answered 8 questions correctly in 2 minutes…

Basic Facts on Integers

Today I did some maths on Maths Playground. The rules of the game were that, there were two numbers under every one number, which meant that the two numbers totaled up to the number on top of it. It was pretty difficult to understand, but I now know how to play the game. I also solved the whole pyramid in under 2 minutes!

Matariki Poems


Matariki is the Maori new year
When the seven stars will appear
We can predict what the coming year will be like
From how clearly we can see them with our naked eyes
The legends behind it fascinates us.

Matariki is celebrated in many different ways

Order Of Operations


Today I played an Order of Operations game where I had an unfinished equation at the bottom of my screen. I had to use the numbers on top of the equation to solve it, but I had to use them wisely. It was a fun game to play, and I really enjoyed it, so I think that maybe I’ll play it again someday.

Number Conundrum Integers

Today I did a maths activity on Number conundrum Integers. At first I didn’t understand how to play,
but I got used to it and found out how the game worked. There was a pyramid shape, and a few
numbers in some of the boxes. The rules were that every number (besides the bottom ones) had
2 numbers beneath it that added up to itself. I completed 2 pyramids and took screenshots.

Alliteration Rap Song

In class, we have recently been learning about Poetic Devices. Most of them happen to be parts of figurative language, and my favourite one is Alliteration. I found a funny and education rap song about Alliteration and I decided to post it on my blog.
I think this is very good for my learning, as I learnt how alliteration is a repetition of words that star with the same letter.

Today I made an infographic using the site 'Canva'. My topic for the infographic was on what makes a good scientist... I came up with lots of ideas including things such as the hypothesis, experiments, results, and the questions that scientists ask themselves after getting their test results.
I had fun making the infographic, and I am proud of the work I have done today!

Learning about Poetic Devices

Today, for writing, we learnt a bit about poetic devices. Poetic devices can be used to create rhythm, including repetition and rhyming. I did a lot of work on Similes, Metaphors, Personification, Imagery, Alliteration and Assonance, Hyperbole Repetition and Rhyme. I had to find their definitions, give my own examples of them, and much much more! But I loved working on poetic devices today, and I am looking forward to more fun activities, though it took my 100 years to finish! That was a Hyperbole right there!

Making A DLO about Integers

Today I made a digital learning object on integers. I made it for my teacher to show to some of my classmates, to help them with their learning.
